Language cafés

How do we support learning Estonian?

At language cafés, you can practise speaking Estonian with volunteers who are native speakers or have at least a C1 level of proficiency, learn everyday vocabulary, and get support for independent language learning. The volunteers involved in the language café provide a natural environment for communication, encouraging participants to speak Estonian, helping them find the right words and supporting them in every step of their journey to learn Estonian.

The language café takes place in a friendly atmosphere and abides by the following principles:

  • The language café is not a language course: this is not a place for in-depth grammar studies or writing exercises. Instead, spontaneous conversation is practised in supportive company, which will help you quickly improve your language skills.
  • We speak a lot: the entire focus is on oral communication so that you can practice using the Estonian language as much as possible.
  • Mistakes are perfectly acceptable: there is no need to worry about imperfect pronunciation or word usage. Practise makes perfect!
  • The topics of conversation are exciting: talking about yourself, travelling, hobbies, work, family, and much more.

Who can participate?

All adult Estonian language learners, i.e. long-term residents, returnees, and newly arrived immigrants, whose language proficiency level is A2 or B1.

How to participate?

We open the cafés once a year across Estonia, for example in Tallinn, Tartu, and Narva. The next language cafés will begin in spring 2026. Language learners can choose one of these cafés based on their preferences in terms of time and place.

After registering at the café, you must attend ten meetings either in person or online. The Language Café course consists of 30 academic hours, with three academic hours once a week. Participation can be cancelled 24 hours before the first café meeting in the self-service portal.

How is it organised?

We organise the café activities in cooperation with partners, whom we involve through public procurement.

Where can I find more information?

We will publish detailed information about the café activities in the self-service portal

How to register?
