LANGUAGE ROULETTE (via Zoom)

Language roulette gets you practising your Estonian! Bringing people together via Zoom, it offers you the chance to chat about given topics in random groups for a pre-determined amount of time. What exactly you’ll be discussing you’ll only find out on the day! A fun, relaxed atmosphere is guaranteed. 

Min. language level required: A2 (The format is open to learners whose Estonian skills are at least at the A2 level as well as to native speakers of the language)

THE MAGICAL WORLD OF ESTONIAN THEATRE: BALLET

This guided tour of the Opera House will give you an insight into how it operates, including backstage! Following the tour we’ll be meeting with a guest linked to the venue, who’ll be telling us about their work. This will be followed by conversation that everyone’s welcome to contribute to.

OUT AND ABOUT IN NATURE WITH ESTONIAN ENTHUSIASTS (Pärnu)

This series of three daytrips in the great outdoors is designed for people from Pärnu County whose mother tongue is a language other than Estonian.  

The series includes: 

Disc golf training and tournament on the stunning nature trail in Jõulumäe on 10 October from 11:00-15:00 

This will be followed by a bogshoe hike in Soomaa National Park on 24 October from 10:00-18:00. 

The events are designed to allow people to practise their Estonian and overcome the language barrier in a relaxed natural setting. Participants will get on first-name terms with Mother Nature in their home county while making new friends and coming together as a team.  

Since the trips will be conducted in Estonian, it will give the participants the chance to practise using the language in the great outdoors, asking and answering questions and chatting with the team. They will learn new words, with the natural surroundings encouraging them to overcome the language barrier. The events will focus on self-expression through speaking.

MUSEUM FRIDAYS - Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design

As part of this series of events we’ll be practising our Estonian on visits to a range of museums, where we’ll learn new things about Estonian history and culture. Each excursion will last for up to an hour-and-a-half. Participants can then extend their visit by exploring the museum further on their own.

CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOPS – Learning Estonian through writing

Participants in these workshops hone their writing skills (both literally and figuratively) by trying out different styles of calligraphy. As an added bonus, they gain a practical skill that can be put to use making, for example, a card for a special occasion or a specially-worded decoration. The workshops are run entirely in Estonian.

Conversation classes for advanced learners

These conversation classes are designed for intermediate to advanced adult learners of Estonian whose language skills already enable them to converse in the language but who need and want to hone their spoken Estonian in particular. 

Each class takes a different topic as its focus, which remains a secret right up until the class begins.

Portrait photography in an urban environment

This event is designed for people who are interested in practising their Estonian while learning how to take great portrait photos in the city using their smartphones. The participants are shown how to capture their best side while expanding their photography-related vocabulary and enjoying the fresh air.

‘GET TO KNOW TALLINN’ – Tales of the city with Jaak Juske: Toompea

Historian Jaak Juske’s fun stories help participants learn more about different parts of the capital while giving them the chance to practise their Estonian. 

The excursions explore different nooks and crannies in the city and   utilise simplified Estonian so that the stories are easier for everyone to understand and benefit from. Promoting language-learning, the excursions are both educational and entertaining.

CONVERSATION CLASSES FOR RUSSIAN-SPEAKING PARENTS OF LANGUAGE IMMERSION PUPILS – ‘The Key to Estonian 2021’

These classes are designed especially for Russian-speaking parents of pupils attending language immersions schools or kindergartens or enrolled in Estonian-language schools, so as to give the parents the chance to learn and practise Estonian based on the language immersion approach. We’ll be sharing our problems and concerns and discussing what unites us: language immersion, supporting our children, choosing suitable educational institutions and transferring between them, plus other education-related matters. The classes will occasionally be attended by language immersion experts, who’ll answer any questions and join in on discussions. Some of the classes will be held in exciting cultural venues. ‘The Key to Estonian’, which was established in 2019, offers language practice through a variety of activities and organises events and excursions.

LET’S GET TOGETHER! – Pärnu Social & Song Club (Pärnu)

“Let’s Get Together!” is a fun series of events aimed at people in Pärnu and Sindi whose mother tongues are languages other than Estonian. The events are designed to let them practise the national language while meeting musicians from their county. The events will take place at 12:00 over seven Sundays in Sindi and Pärnu. 

In a relaxed atmosphere, accompanied by tea and coffee, participants can socialise, chat in Estonian and enjoy live performances of well-known Estonian-language songs. 

The fun, playful nature of the club events will get people of all ages learning Estonian without them even realising it! “Let’s Get Together!” represents an opportunity to get to know local folk and pop culture and Estonians as a singing nation. The ability to hold a tune is not required!
