Film: Seitse liiva (41 min) + kohtumine režissöör Aare Baumeriga

Rand on piir kahe erineva keskkonna vahel. See on unistuste kohaks, kus jalutad paljajalu soojal liival või kuulad lainete tasast sahinat päikeseloojangu kumas. Otsime laulvat liiva seitsmest rannast, seitsmes kaunis kohas Eestis. Meie südasuvine matk algab Treimanist, edasi mängime liivaga Ruhnu saare Limo rannal, jalutame Saaremaa Harilaiu kividel ja Luidja ranna luidetel. Nendele järgnevad Nõva, Laulasmaa ja viimaseks puhkame Peipsi põhjakaldal, Kauksi rannaliival. Laulva liiva fenomenile puudub siiani täpne selgitus.

Film: Naaber metssiga (52 min)

Prantsusmaa | 2024 | 52’ | originaalkeel: English | subtiitrid: eesti
Originaalpealkiri: Sangliers & Cie

At folk dance evenings, music for dancing is played by Estonian folk musicians who come from both near and far and play a variety of instruments, from mandolins to bagpipes.

No language skills are required to participate in the dance house, because we communicate through the language of dance. No prior dance skills are required either, as dance steps can be learned on the spot. Through various dances and musical works, you can get acquainted with different aspects of Estonian folk culture, including games and dance songs in addition to dancing. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for dancing and come along!

NB! Folk musicians are eagerly awaiting local musicians! If you are a musician – whether young or old, whether you play the flute, kannel, guitar, or some other instrument – the musicians will be waiting for you half an hour before the dance evening begins in Rugodiv to get acquainted and rehearse. If you wish, you will have the opportunity to try your hand at playing with others at the dance evening.

Skills developed: listening, cultural awareness.

Matsalu Nature Film Festival comes to Narva and Ida-Viru County for the sixth time

The first week of October (1–5 October) brings the films and various activities of the International Matsalu Nature Film Festival (MAFF) to Narva and Ida-Viru County. This year, the festival will expand beyond the limits of Narva for the first time – on 4 October, a full day of exciting activities will take place at the Aidu quarry and the Aidu Water Sport Centre.

This time, MAFF offers something new at the Estonian Language House in addition to the familiar Nature Film Day. This year, the festival is truly an Ida-Viru County festival, not just an event in Narva – on 4 October, an entertaining and adventurous festival day will take place at the Aidu quarry and Water Sport Centre in cooperation with the Aidu Water Sport Centre.

The Aidu quarry was chosen as the venue for the festival because it is a place where the intersection of humans and nature can be experienced very distinctly – the former mining landscape has become a place where nature has returned and where humans have found new uses for it. During the hikes on 4 October, participants will hear stories about the past and the future of the area.

The Aidu Day of the MAFF in Ida-Viru County (4 October) offers an opportunity to participate in the following events:

  • 10.30 a.m.–2.30 p.m. hike in the Aidu quarry (up to 20 people). Register here.
  • 12.45 p.m.–3.00 p.m. canoeing and excursion along the Aidu canals (up to 20 people). Register here.
  • 3.30–5.30 p.m. film screening and discussion (up to 50 people). Register here.
  • 6.00–8.00 p.m. Kaia Karjatse concert with singing bowls and gongs (up to 40 people). Register here

‘The MAFF in Ida-Viru County is an event that raises environmental awareness as well promotes integration. The Estonian Language House of the Integration Foundation aims to reach everyone in Narva as well as Ida-Viru County in general who cares about nature and the environment, regardless of their nationality or age. This is a shared issue for all of us. By watching the latest nature films by Estonian and international directors and experiencing nature together, we contribute to understanding diversity in its broadest sense,’ said Anna Farafonova, Head of the Estonian Language House.

Narva film programme:

On 1 October, a special film night will take place at the Estonian Language House in Narva, where Riho Västrik’s wordless nature film Notes from the Woods will be screened.

On October 5, the Narva Film Day will take place with a special guest. The audience will enjoy the following films: Seven Sands by Estonian director Aare Baumer, followed by a meeting with the author. On the same day, films from around the world will also be shown: Little Mouse – Brave Mother, The Neighbor Boar, and Love in the Air.

Nature films will also be shown in schools in Narva during the festival week.

International programme:

Films that reveal lesser-known aspects of familiar animals (mice, wild boars) to the audience are also coming to Ida-Viru County. We often encounter them in a negative context, but these films help viewers understand and perhaps even sympathise with them. The programme also includes more exotic stories, such as the fate of the endangered burrowing owl in North America in Burrowing Owls: A Love Story or the flying prowess of different species and the beauty of courtship rituals in the air in Love in the Air.

Please note!

  • The Aidu programme on 4 October – hikes, film screenings, and the concert – requires pre-registration (limited number of places). Join the Facebook event here.
  • Hikers are asked to bring a €10 participation fee, which includes hot soup and the use of a sauna.
  • You can register for the film events taking place on 1 October and 5 October at the Narva Estonian Language House via the self-service portal of the Integration Foundation or simply turn up on the day.

A presentation of a new Estonian language learning tool, Face to Face with Art cards, took place in Narva

The Estonian Language House of the Integration Foundation, Narva Art Residency, and art historian Maarin Ektermann collaborated to produce Face to Face with Art, a new set of art cards. It is a game-based learning tool that allows the player to experience art while practising Estonian in a creative and inspiring way.

The art cards were presented at the Narva Art Residency NART on 18 September. People present at the event had the opportunity to meet the authors and creators as well as try their hand at playing with the cards. Attendees were also gifted the new cards. Anyone who wishes to do so will be able to borrow the decks of cards from art museums and galleries in Tallinn and Tartu starting in October.

Anna Farafonova, Head of the Estonian Language House, said: ‘It is important for the Estonian Language House to create resources for learners that bring joy and broaden their horizons. Face to Face with Art cards combine learning the language with experiencing art – they provide an opportunity to learn Estonian in an experiential and creative way, to experience art, and to discover oneself in a new language environment.’ According to Pille Maffucci, a teacher at the Estonian Language House, people experience similar emotions when entering a classroom or an art gallery, especially a modern art exhibition – they need to overcome a certain barrier, fear of the unknown and the incomprehensible, as well as the fear of looking foolish because they do not understand what is going on. ‘The new set of art cards helps to overcome this fear both when encountering art and when learning a language. When solving tasks, fear disappears. The tasks reinforce what has already been learned or it makes something completely new more familiar,’ said Maffucci.

The aim of the Face to Face with Art cards is to offer language learners and art enthusiasts an exciting and engaging opportunity to experience art, analyse it, while practising Estonian at a level that suits them. The deck contains 42 cards with questions and tasks that help the players delve deeper into works of art and develop their vocabulary, speaking skills, and grammar. The questions are divided into three language levels (A1–A2, B1, and B2). In addition, the deck contains joker cards that allow the players to come up with their own tasks.

The cards can be used alone or in a group, with a teacher, or with friends. Starting from the end of September, the cards will be available at art museums and galleries in Narva and Tallinn.

According to Johanna Rannula, the Head of the Narva Art Residency, the idea of creating a deck of cards began to take shape a few years ago. ‘Maarin Ektermann was visiting Narva and floated the idea. It was as good as done at that moment! Yesterday, teachers in Narva received their decks of cards, and next, we are heading to the capital. We are planning an event in Tallinn in October – the exact time and place will be announced soon. The first batch of cards will soon be sold out, at which point we will consider reprinting them,’ said Rannula.

The art cards were created under the leadership of Pille Maffucci and Sandra Vellevoog from the Estonian Language House of the Integration Foundation, Johanna Rannula from the Narva Art Residency, and art historian and lecturer Maarin Ektermann. The design and illustrations were created by Moonika Maidre, and the pouches were sewn from Kreenholm fabrics by Natalja Kapajeva. Made Isak was responsible for language editing. The cards were printed by Folger Printing House.

The project was inspired by the ‘Kunstiavaja kaardid’ deck of cards (2021) of the Art Museum of Estonia.

The publication of the art cards was sponsored by the Integration Foundation and the Estonian Cultural Endowment.
